The Pirate House Is A Quirky Roadside Attraction In Southern California

pirates house

Just down the street from Black Rabbit Rose you'll find No Vacancy, another Houston Brothers property. The Prohibition-era speakeasy is set in an old Victorian home and has a clever secret entrance. Once you've made it in (sometimes a challenge on a busy night), you can explore the many spaces including the lovely back patio or the candlelit parlor. They do serve food although most people come for the ambiance and the ever-changing cocktail menu. The most interesting thing about the bar may be the fact that the house wasn't originally built in Hollywood.

The History of The Pirates’ House

For a comprehensive history of the restaurant, check out this piece by Danny Jensen. Ser Davos would hang out here, probably during happy hour when the already cheap drinks are even cheaper. The Bounty serves reasonably priced American fare and it's open daily for lunch. The main bar is located beneath a red-and-yellow striped circus tent while a robot tends a second, smaller bar. The menu consists of "elevated" carnival food, which includes corn dogs, sliders, flatbreads and tots. Check the website for details on their beta nights (when they test new games) or the numerous immersive theater and VR experiences they regularly program.

Kendrick was a lifelong pirate aficionado and would dress up as pirate and hide treasure in between the cracks and crevices of the tower for neighborhood kids to find. Savannah is a place of turmoil and unrest when it comes to the spirit world. It’s no surprise to hear when yet another location is ridiculously haunted.

Black Rabbit Rose & Madame Siam

This Hollywood Boulevard bar does its best to top the cantina where Han shot first, complete with war room-style maps and customers milling about in their best First Order cosplay. It wouldn't be accurate to say Scum & Villainy is only a Star Wars bar. All fandoms are welcome at weekly game nights, karaoke, trivia contests and occasional cosplay evenings.

This Space is Yours

You'll enter, once again, through a clandestine door where a spiral staircase takes you from a mezzanine to a dimly lit rum bar. La Descarga is not a neighborhood bar you can just stumble into for a casual drink. The upbeat music is a touch too loud for contemplation, reservations are required and the dress code demands upscale attire. But if you want to make a night of it, you can enjoy live bands, dancers and a sultry vibe.

The Edison shares an owner, and a penchant for meticulous design, with Clifton's. Housed in a former power plant, it's a cavernous space with an aesthetic that feels like the Paris World's Fair of 1900 in an alternate universe's industrial revolution. Regular events include live jazz and burlesque, although you'd be wise to check the calendar to ensure the venue isn't closed for a private event or a shoot. They serve fancy snacks and craft cocktails and the bouncers enforce a strict dress code, so make sure everyone in your party is dressed to impress. It was once part of a chain of themed restaurants and this outpost is the last survivor.

Home to artists of all disciplines and genres, check out our DJ studios in action; get inspired for your next studio session, or your first. This hilarious interactive show puts visitors right in the middle of the pirate action aboard San Salvador, a replica 1542 Spanish galleon. Spirits of sailors are the most commonly reported occurrence, and for good reason considering the past of the building.

Make your way into The Green Room and you'll find a film-themed cocktail menu designed with Instagram in mind. One of the most extravagant drinks is The Short Round, named for Indiana Jones's buddy in The Temple of Doom. It's made with Macallan 12, Dolin Blanc and Suze, and it comes in a chest that billows with fog when opened, courtesy of a dry ice skull.

Mrs. Mary Hillyer and the Savannah Gas Company

Eventually, Bones died from a stroke and the map fell into the possession of the book’s narrator, Jim Hawkins. The property was acquired by the Savannah Gas Company in 1945 and the dilapidated building was slated for demolition. It was saved by Mrs. Mary Hillyer, wife of the president of the company Mr. Hansell Hillyer. Mary, along with some other local ladies, took it upon themselves to restore General Oglethorpe’s vision of Savannah.

Well, for one, it has more than 50 fiberglass pirates staged around the property. It’s a fun place to sight-see and escape into a fun, mystical land of pirates. Yes, we host a range of DJ courses and workshops taught by experienced local tutors in our private studios. Find and book classes through the DJ lessons section on our website. With plug-and-play simplicity, you only need a USB and headphones to start DJing on CDJs.

This is a great bar to take your out-of-town friends if you're nearby on a slow night or your pals don't mind waiting in line. Inside, it's a Reagan-era spectacle with bartenders doing their best Cocktail impressions and a back bar on hydraulics that lowers to reveal breakdancers and moonwalkers. You can play a round or two of Pac-Man then see about renting one of the secret karaoke rooms in the back. If you'd rather sing to impress a crowd, stop by for live band karaoke on Tuesdays. Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)" is always a crowd pleaser.

The children’s menu had punch-out pirate features that Jeff quickly put to good use. Keep in mind that it is a private residence, so be mindful of the hours you visit.

The woodsy bottom floors are dominated by a towering, fake Redwood tree and taxidermy galore. Seek out a secret cave for contemplation located near the bar on the second floor. Then meander up to the gorgeous Gothic Bar, which looks like a broody cathedral located deep in the forest. Clifton's does have a tiki bar on a higher floor, but as we said, that's for a different list. Although Clifton's reopened with its American-style cafeteria intact, that portion has since closed. Obi-Wan Kenobi promised a young Luke Skywalker that he would "never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy" than the Mos Eisley Spaceport.

And put back together so we could drink sazeracs and eat po'boys with Zacc chips. The street scene facades and plethora of antique knick-knacks should give you plenty to look at while you practice your best Southern charms. The theater offers a variety of ticketed magic and vaudeville shows as well as the occasional jazz night. Guests can order cocktails made with spectacle or Thai-Chinese cuisine from takeout window Crying Tiger. Connected to Black Rabbit Rose is Madame Siam, a carnival-themed cocktail bar complete with a midway where you can shoot cans and play ring toss. This festival celebrates California’s rich maritime history and our connection to the ocean!

Drinks at BeetleHouse LA are themed and mostly sweet, like the tropical Big Fish Bowl, meant for two. If you want to eat there, make a reservation for the adjacent dining room. Dinner is prix fixe and includes an appetizer (like the Corprese Bride salad), a main course (maybe the Linguini Todd or Edward Burger Hands) and a dessert. The tower was originally built in 1926 as an enclosed staircase to the beach for William E. Brown, a senator from Los Angeles. In the 1940s, Brown sold his home to retired naval captain, Harold Kendrick.

Explore California’s fascinating maritime history through fun, interactive tours and activities at Ocean Institute. The institute offers cruises and sails, weekend tours, special events, plus a summer Buccaneer Adventure Camp for kids ages 7-8. Workers have reported feeling the eerie presence of entities and even coming face-to-face with the spirits of seamen who enjoyed the tavern in years past. Situated a scant block from the Savannah River, the inn became a rendezvous for pirates and visiting sailors from the Seven Seas.

The menu consists of bar food (sandwiches, salads, fried starters) while the cocktail menu lists a variety of maritimey drinks, including Mai Tais and Dark and Stormies. To 8 p.m., is the best time to stop by if you're a grumpy pirate who's not into loud, live music. Yet another Houston Brothers spot, La Descarga is a Cuban-themed nightclub and cigar lounge best suited for upscale parties or intimate dates.

Black Rabbit Rose & Madame Siam

At first blush, the Green Room doesn't seem like much of a themed bar but stay with us. It's tucked inside Burbank's Castaway, a hilltop restaurant that opened in 1962 with a Polynesian theme. The 2018 renovation ditched the island vibes for a clean, modern design but if you look closely, you'll spot nods to the movie industry. The menus look like screenplays and a Wilson volleyball with a bloody handprint on it rests on an otherwise chic shelf. What was once a reference to a deserted isle is now a sly reference to the 2000 Tom Hanks drama Castaway.

The Herb House

This was a process known as ‘shanghai-ing’ and left countless men as indentured servants to the sea captains that kidnapped them. We’d heard that a pirate would give you a tour of the restaurant if you asked, so after lunch, we tracked down our pirate. Step behind the decks and push the boundaries of your creativity, without worrying about the neighbours. Whether you're learning how to DJ for the first time, practising for a show, or just having a mix with a friend, the space is yours to do it at full volume. ๐Ÿ If nautical nonsense be something you wish, then r/spongebob is the place to be, matey! ๐ŸThis subreddit is dedicated to everything SpongeBob SquarePants – share memes, discuss episodes, and celebrate the beloved yellow sponge and his underwater adventures.

The building remained intact through the centuries, but lost its spark and had fallen into disuse after World War II. Book a music teacher for lessons at any of our studios in LA, or get started with online music lessons. Crack Ableton, get to grips with guitar, or master the art of DJing. All of our DJ rehearsal studios are equipped with Pioneer gear, making any room ideal to practice for DJ gigs.

This popular tavern is no different — many visitors have reported strange ghostly activity during their visits to the Pirate’s House. In the process, the Pirate’s House received a loving restoration, ensuring that it would endure the years and be available for generations to come. The establishment reopened as a tea room in 1953 and boasts a fabulous menu with a cozy dining space.

Beginners can also use our how to beatmatch guide and book DJ lessons at their nearest DJ studio or online. Casablanca is a longstanding Mexican restaurant known for its house-made tortillas, roaming mariachis and giant margaritas, which can be ordered from a cart. The decor, however, is entirely devoted to the 1942 film Casablanca. That includes colorful murals and a life size statue of Humphrey Bogart.

The fun-filled weekend features visiting tall ships, cannon battles, mermaid swim shows, pirate school, live music, re-enactors and sailor camp, vendors, food trucks, and more. Guests to the Pirates’ House are seated in various rooms in the building. Apparently, the place started out as an inn and tavern, but soon pirates were frequenting the establishment. Supposedly, a tunnel connected the inn and tavern to the river where unsuspecting drunkards were carried off to their new life as crew members of a ship. There are two Bigfoot Lodges, one in Atwater Village and another in Palms.

LA's Coolest, Weirdest, Most Immersive Themed Bars

Join us for an open decks night in LA at our West Adams DJ studios. Named after an undead bio-exorcist, the bar is a tribute to all things Tim Burton. Artwork, decor and photo-friendly tableaus reference Edward Scissorhands, A Nightmare Before Christmas and Batman Returns. Danny Elfman scores and dark wave tracks from the '80s set a playful, spooky vibe that reflects Burton's aesthetic.

This meant that our beloved Pirates’ House received it’s first restoration treatment under the magic wand of Mrs. Hillyer. With great imagination, perseverance, and skill she was able to save the building and renovate it into the restaurant it is today. The Herb House was built on a ten-acre plot of land located on the east side of James Oglethorpe's original plan of the city of Savannah. The plot of land was assigned to become a botanical garden that modeled the Chelsea Botanical Garden in London, England. The garden, which was located beyond the bounds of today's buildings,[4] was dedicated to Oglethorpe's trustees, becoming known as the Trustees' Garden. Jump ahead a decade at Davey Wayne's sister bar, Break Room 86, hidden inside the Line Hotel in Koreatown.

Around 1753, when Georgia had become firmly established and the need for the experimental garden no longer existed, the site was developed as a residential section. Since Savannah had become a thriving seaport town, one of the first buildings constructed on the former garden site was naturally an inn for visiting sailors. Since 1753, The Pirate's House has been welcoming visitors to Savannah with a bounty of delicious food and drink and rousing good times. Check out our how to DJ guide for a smooth start, and consider booking private DJ lessons at our LA studios or online. Curious about our DJ rooms and equipment but not quite ready to book?

Best Mac For Graphic Design of 2024 For All Budgets

best macbook for graphic design

For anyone who plans to play games on their laptop as well as use it for graphic design, one of our best gaming laptops may be more up your alley. Gaming laptops naturally share the same specs needed for graphic design software. When thinking about how to choose the right laptop for graphic design, there are a few key specs to consider.

Display

The new M1 processors are faster than previous chips, and they offer good graphical performance too. However, the fanless design of the MacBook Air is a problem if you work long hours. For graphic designers relying on cloud-based applications, the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook 5 stands out as an exceptionally affordable option without compromising on quality. Benchmark tests reveal a substantial performance boost, particularly in graphics-intensive applications, streamlining creative workflows.

Inkscape Review: The Best Free Graphic Design App For Macs

If you see inaccuracies in our content, please report the mistake via this form. Storage is arguably a little less critical, as well-specified laptops now come with fast PCIe SSDs. But we still test sequential throughput and random access to make sure that nothing unusual is going on.

What is the Best Mac for the Adobe Design Suite?

If you're running the best graphic design software, you'll need ample power and an excellent display to render your creative works, and that's exactly what we look for when we test laptops for graphic design. They are often equipped with some of the most powerful processors in the tech industry. On top of that, they have great graphics cards, huge storage drives, and a ton of RAM, providing professionals with all the power and space they need for work. When it comes to best laptops for designers, we rigorously test each device against a list of features, with special focus on screen quality and performance. These are two of the most important assets when running creative apps like graphic design software, photo editors, and graphics-hungry apps like the best VFX software, and best 3D modeling software.

Brilliant performance at an affordable price

We aim to give you a view into how each laptop could actually fit into your life and workflow, and the pros and cons of their various features like performance, display, and battery life. For a good graphic design laptop, you’ll want a modern processor from either Intel or AMD. When it comes to MacBooks, Apple has its own chip – the M1 – which performs brilliantly as well.

Best Mac for creative pros

This model comes with an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU M2 chip, alongside 8GB of unified memory and 256GB SSD storage. That's probably not enough storage for creative professionals, especially ones working with large file sizes. This is very impressive, and easily beats the previous MacBook Pro 13-inch's score by several hours. During our review of the MacBook Pro 13-inch (M2, 2022), we were able to easily get a whole workday out of the battery, and that was while performing intensive tasks such as video editing.

MacBook Pro 14-inch ( review: should you buy it?

In short, the best Mac for Graphic Design is the one that best suits your goals and needs as a graphic designer. The iMac is the cheapest alternative to have a full desktop workstation for graphic design. If the M1 chip is enough enough for your deign tasks, it can be a good purchase, otherwise, better move to a Mac Mini M2 or M2 Pro plus an external display of 24″ or bigger. And why don’t I recommend the MacBook Pro with M2 Max for graphic design? Quite simply, because I don’t think most designers need such a powerful computer.

What Mac setup for graphic designer for home and on the go in 2024?

This time, if Apple just upgrades the screen to OLED and keeps everything else the same, the price might not change. If, however, it takes the opportunity for a more wide-ranging overhaul, don’t be surprised if the price increases slightly. While many of Apple’s laptop rivals have embraced OLED screens, Apple has stuck firmly with mini-LED in its MacBook Pro — and the results have been spectacular. As we said when we reviewed the M3 Max MacBook Pro, it has the best display out of any laptop, bar none. As mentioned, the old Air has one of Apple’s previous generation displays. However, since Retina displays have become the new normal, you’ll notice a stark difference from one of Apple’s new displays.

Apple's new MacBook Pros and iMacs come with either a retina display or liquid retina display. In previous Macs that I have owned, I never went below 512GB of hard drive storage. For my most recent Mac laptop purchase, I went ahead and upgraded to 1TB of hard drive storage knowing that I would keep this Mac laptop for a while before having to purchase a new one.

The MacBook Pro provides stellar performance for intensive Adobe tasks like panorama stitching, working with 3D objects, applying complex filters and edits on high resolution images. The software ecosystem is just as important as hardware for designers. Here, MacBook Pros shine as well because they run the latest macOS operating system.

One of the biggest problems with graphic design laptops is that they can be pretty expensive. When it comes to testing laptops for graphic design, we look for a good, high resolution screen, assessing pixel density, colour accuracy, contrast and more, to decide how well it performs for graphic design. We also test for both CPU core and graphics performance to make sure you'll get the performance you expect from the latest processors and GPUs. But let’s face it, you can’t spend many hours designing comfortably on a MacBook Pro screen, no matter if it’s 13″, 14″ or 16″, because it offers a rather limited screen workspace.

The retina display is a high-resolution screen that offers clear text and images. Retina displays also have a wider color gamut, which allows for more accurate color reproduction. If you're in a rush here are some guidelines that I stand by whenever I'm buying a new Apple MacBook.

The Mac mini is one of Apple's best-kept secrets for its performance and price. When choosing from the best laptops or computers, you should always take into consideration your budget and your daily workflow. Sure it would be nice to have the ability to purchase the most maxed-out version of a Mac laptop or computer but that isn’t the case for everyone. Finally, the last category and the one that matters to me a bit more than the others is the device size. Equipping your next Mac laptop or computer with enough storage can help to keep your Mac feeling snappy when it comes to opening, creating, and finding the files you need. If you fill up your Mac too quickly with working files, your Mac will begin to slow down as it tries to process the information and instructions given to it by the applications you are using.

Below I will go into more detail about each specification so you can better understand how to choose your next Mac laptop or Mac computer for graphic design. Once, you’d have wanted a high-end matte display from a company like Eizo, with almost perfect colour reproduction, but that may not be as critical today. These days most projects are intended to be displayed on the screen – including digital magazines, websites, and app interfaces – rather than printed.

True, it has a little less resolution and brightness than the MacBook Pro’s mentioned above, but it’s so good that, for me, it’s no reason to buy a higher Mac model. Below, I will show you which Mac I think is best suited for each branch of graphic design. Realistically, any modern Mac is broadly suitable for the majority of design work – it’s just that less powerful machines will slow you down.

What Are the Most Affordable Cheapest Cruise Lines?

most affordable cruise line

Maui is the next island on the itinerary, with a luau, a drive or helicopter flight to Haleakala Crater, a scenic drive along the East Maui coast, or an underwater cruise on the Atlantis submarine. After four days at sea, the Koningsdam stops in Ensenada, Mexico, before returning to San Diego. For example, we were able to find a 7-day Caribbean cruise sailing in October, in a Veranda cabin for four, for $1,988 plus taxes. For those who prefer an all-inclusive rate, including tips, Wifi and beverage package, Celebrity’s all-included rate can add to the value of this family vacation. During the year, some of the best cruise deals for families have been kids sailing for $0 or $1 when cruising in the same cabin as their parents on select sailings.

Alaska in May and September

Even travelers not bound by school schedules sometimes shy away from these cruises because of the imperfect weather conditions. Princess is an excellent option for singles and couples as some ship areas are adult-only, such as The Sanctuary top deck. Fares can start in the mid-$200s per night, but other itineraries can cost more. The fare may also cover specific onboard experiences like cooking lessons and shows. Norwegian is another famous mainstream cruise line and has competitive prices for many routes.

MSC creates a really fun, family-friendly environment that the whole family will enjoy. Whether if it’s spending time at the pool areas, in the kid’s club or the onboard attractions, your family will have a great time on an MSC cruise. Royal Caribbean is an option for the cheapest cruise lines because you get a lot of bang for your buck. Finally, keep in mind that the best deals will always be for an inside cabin, which means you won’t have a porthole (let alone a balcony) for natural light. You’ll sleep like a baby in total darkness, especially during an afternoon nap.

All Inclusive Cruises vs. Traditional All Inclusive Vacations

No matter which cruise line you sail, it's a truth universally acknowledged that the first and last Alaska sailings of the season are the most affordable. Combine those factors with a shoulder-season fall travel date (between mid-September and the week before Christmas), and you have yourself a more affordable luxury cruise. As Carnival has a diverse fleet of ships and itineraries, so it’s essential to pick the best itinerary for your money and travel desires. Shorter cruises tend to attract more of a party crowd that won’t be a good fit for young families and those seeking a calm getaway.

Known as “wave season,” these months usually have industry-wide sales that can provide you with the best deals. MSC Cruises is one of the cheapest cruise lines if you want to take a 7-day sailing to the Caribbean. Carnival is known for their affordable cruise prices and cruise ships that the whole family can enjoy. Often referred to as “America’s Cruise Line”, Carnival is one of the best cruise lines for a families on a budget. Several big-ship cruise lines have entered the luxury travel space with suite enclaves that come with extra amenities, and the options can be affordable by luxury standards. These cruises are ideal for families looking for upscale accommodations combined with robust children's programming or luxury travelers who prefer a more casual vibe or a wealth of entertainment and activity options on board. Before booking any cruise, it’s a good idea to compare the cost of your room and planned amenities. Celebrity Cruises most likely won’t be the cheapest upfront option, but your fare can include drinks, surf WiFi and tips.

The UK-based cruise line describes itself as a ‘premium value no-fly cruise line’ and is a solid option for cheap cruises to destinations such as the Norwegian fjords, Mediterranean, British Isles and Iceland. We are no longer supporting IE (Internet Explorer) as we strive to provide site experiences for browsers that support new web standards and security practices. As the Mediterranean line grows its U.S.-based fleet, it is staying attuned to the needs of traveling families. The cruise line also embraces simple pleasures like free-flowing soft-serve ice cream and pizza and a day spent lounging by the pool. Disney thinks of all the little things that can help parents have a stress-free trip with kids in tow.

The newer ships and longer cruise travel dates can be a better option for cruisers that want top-notch amenities and a more balanced crowd. Families are more likely to find children’s programs without the steep cost of a Disney cruise. While the experience isn’t the same, children and parents will likely still have a great time. Booking a suite can also be a good option if you have a bigger travel budget but don’t want to splurge for a luxury liner. Ocean cruises are one of the best ways to explore multiple Caribbean islands or the Pacific Northwest without the hassles of booking numerous flights, hotel rooms and rental cars.

To put that deal in perspective, imagine having your accommodations, food and entertainment covered for roughly $50 a day on a traditional land-based trip—you’d be hard-pressed to stay within that budget just for your meals. This eight-day cruise aboard the 36-guest Safari Explorer begins in Kona, on the Big Island, with a champagne welcome from the captain. The next two days feature a hike up the slopes of Hualalai with a naturalist guide, night snorkeling among Giant Pacific Manta rays, and plenty of opportunities for swimming or kayaking.
